EMERGING EARLY SIGNS OF DROUGHT IN MANDERA COUNTY
Water
 Shortage in parts of Mandra County has been an issue of concern over the years.Emerging early signs of drought is being experienced all over the county.
 According to the County government, recently while in search of water, a thirsty lion fell and died in a domestic water tank in Kukub village, Banisa constituency which has a population of more than 5000 people. In this region, the crisis has not only affected the people and their livestock but the wild animals as well. Hyena invasion near homesteads in the county has been on the rise owing to scarcity of water resources.
Derkhale, another location in the Constituency with a population of more than 6000 people is facing serious water shortage. Other areas as reported by the county government that are also facing water shortage include; Bur john location in Mandera North constituency ,ogorweine ,ashabito,Yado, Falama, Kuro, Garse, Ireskinto and Buqe among others..
Speaking during water stakeholders meeting held at the County Headquarters,Ahmed Ali Madey,The Executive Committee Member for water ,environment and sanitation  said “parts of Mandera County is currently facing a serious water shortage which might lead to loss of both human and livestock population unless an urgent mitigation measures are put in place”
The National Government  has not released funds for the financial year 2013-2014 hence the County government will not be able to adequately  respond to emerging signs of water shortage which typical of the start of harsh dry spell which often turns to drought.
The County government is therefore appealing to non-state actors to help while the County government will push to get the budget funds released to them by the National government.
